Yesterday was St Wenceslas Day. What does that mean? Nothing. Technically, we didn’t have class. But I never have class on wednesday anyway.
The decision was made to be the day in which I would go see two sculptures I have wanted to see for a while.
For you Turkers out there, and the random others that might know the story of The Wemmicks, I was doing some research on NetFlix (because I want) and found this exchange of insulting recommendations between friends. First on the list for the responding party: “Wemmicks: If I only had a Green Nose”
So the rumors are true….I’m in Prague.
For those of you unfamiliar with Eastern Europe, I’m here .
I got here last saturday in the afternoon. I’m living in a dorm with a whole load of American students. I was kind of hoping that this would be a much more international affair. Unfortunately, that is not the case, so I am stuck with a bunch of American College Students living up the stereotype. Loud americans smoking and drinking to excess. All they want to do is drink and get high and that’s about it. I’m surprised, the guys don’t even seem all too interested in picking up Czech girls…just drinking. Oh well.
These are all of the Scotland pictures I have uploaded at the moment.

Finally got the posts I wrote from Scotland into the LJ, apparently something kooky with AvantGo…whatever.
So I just realized how I hadn’t updated since the election. Makes sense really. I got depressed after finding out about Kerry’s concession, and that just happened to coincide with a downturn in the weather. Convenient.
John Kerry has announced that he will give up. Al Gore gave up. What ever happened to just getting beat? The votes were tallied and it came out that the other guy won. That is when you were gracious and admitted defeat. Not before all the votes were counted. That’s called pussying out. Dean would have been great..if he were in this exact situation (which he wouldn’t have been, he would be secure in his victory by now) he would have been one feirce bear of a man, making sure that he gave it his all. Heard a quote of Bush’s last night saying he gave it his all. Bullshit. I’m sure that somewhere in between those ears exist some logic and rationality, and that is what he should be giving. Fuck him. Guess we’ll just have to impeach him. Someone I know had actually said he would like to have Bush reelected, just so that he can be held accountable. If he were out on Jan 20, he would effectively be let off scot free.
Speaking of scots, free and otherwise, I am still in Scotland and my room is pink. Pictures were taken.
Spent last night at the Dundonnell Inn in Dundonnell. Had an awesome time. Got to be good friends with the staff when Kev and I closed down the bar. Met a local brewer. Drank with him. Met some Polish girls who are working out their rent at the hotel while they see Scotland. Did not mention Team Poland, but I did drink with them. Met Garreth, the barmen. Drank with him. Good times. Kev tried to get with one of the Polish girls. No such luck. Good thing, as I was his wingman and her friend wasn’t exactly what I look for.
Left the TV on all night to the election coverage. Prefer not to think about that. When I get in front of a keyboard, I’ll knock out a rant expanding on the beginning of this entry. But for now, the BBC has this weird propensity to put people on blue screen and make them part of all sorts of crazy landscapes. Last night, there was a guy ‘in front’ of the ‘white house’ standing on a map of the ‘united’ states. You had to see it..
Today brought us to Dunvagen, home of Dunvagen castle, the world’s oldest continually occupied castle. There is a special uestbook, behind the desk, for MacLeod descendants. We all signed that with the exception of my father, the swede.
I worry about my country. This has just clinched the idea that I am going to get a laptop, some money, and travel the world for a bit after school. Living in America will just frustrate me. It frustrates me now.
I think I will tour the US first though. Just because I don’t know how much of it will be left after everyone who hates us takes out a peice. Some of them have very good reasons for hating us. Things are busted. Time for penthouses, psych wards and Bruce Willis.
Had an excellent time on the Isle of Lewis yesterday. Met at the ferry landing by Angus and his brother Delcollum. They’re my grandfather’s first cousins. I think. They took us on a very welcome tour of the island.
I have never seen such geography. There were no trees, mountains off in the distance, and the oddest steps of peat cut out of the ground. And sheep. Sheep everywhere.
They took us by an ancient stone circle. Massive stones sticking 20 feet up in the air. Arranged in compass-like fashion and sporting a sacrifice spot in the center under the central monolith. Quite cozy.
On the ferry now to Stornoway and I have officially had my first ‘I hate my family’ breakdown. Was wondering when that would happen.
Last night, we were picked up at the airport by the rest of the travellers plus Jean (My grandfather’s cousin who is the mother of Paul, the one whose wedding I went to last May). Directly from the airport we went to Catherine’s house. I am under the impression that she is family. Of what relation, I do not know, but she made us dinner.
I fell asleep several times at her house. That was nice.
When we finally got back to the hotel, I was getting ready for bed and trying to recharge my PDA, camera battery and cell phone. I had brought a power strip just for the purpose. As soon as I plugged in the power strip, it exploded. Big blue spark from the strip, a flash from the outlet and no lights in the room. The lady that came to fix it was shocked that we actually blew the fuse instead of just tripping it. She couldn’t fix it. So we slept in darkness and my PDA is down to 21% battery. I hadn’t even plugged anything into the power strip.
My grandfather is stubborn. Getting the parking tag validated last night at the airport took twice as long because of him. Getting the tickets for this ferry was complicated by him. Ordering breakfast this morning was botched by him. He’s completely lucid and speaks clearly and hears reasonably well, but because of his stubborness, things take twice as long. Don’t get me wrong, I love him, and I love spending time with him, but I like him a lot more when he is at the head of the dining room table, letting others handle the situation and just enjoying it.
That’s all for now, not sure if I can charge my PDA tonight so I don’t want to empty the battery.
I didn’t just trip the fuse, I blew it. No lights, no TV, no space heater.
That’s okay, I’m going to pass out again soon anyway.
Tommorrow, waking up at 6 and leaving at 7 to take a two hour ferry ride. Details of tonight’s festivities to follow. But for now, sleep.
So, technically, this could be considered day two, since I did leave JFK saturday night at 11. But we are going to go on saying today is day 1 for convenience.
After having my bag repacked not once, but twice by my mother, we managed to get to my grandfather’s house in Little Neck only an hour and a half later than we wanted. My cousin Kevin, my travel/bar buddy, was sleeping in his car in the driveway, because he has no key and our arrival was supposed to coincide with his a bit better.
I’m going to try to make entries about my trip to Scotland. I don’t have any reason to believe that these entries will be posted any time before I get back to the states, but that’s the best I can do, because I don’t think that I will find too many iCafès in northern Scotland. So with that being said, onto the entries.
Tonight, July 28, the day after my father’s birthday, at approximately 7:30 pm Southampton, NY time, my grandfather, Augustus Golding Sartain, finished his time on the earth.
He was 91 years old.
I was in an AOD meeting when I found out. We were giving people funny nicknames for the girls session cabin assignments. Good times. As always. Mary walked in and told me that Tom Sartain was on the phone. My heart sank. My spirits dropped. I knew what was coming, but I still ran.
