Motherland: Conclusion (Several Days Later)

Finally got the posts I wrote from Scotland into the LJ, apparently something kooky with AvantGo…whatever.

So I just realized how I hadn’t updated since the election. Makes sense really. I got depressed after finding out about Kerry’s concession, and that just happened to coincide with a downturn in the weather. Convenient.

Let’s see…playing catch-up. Stayed in a very pink room in Dunvagen, ended up sleeping from 6:00 to about 1 in the morning, then through til morning. Yay depression.

Saw some Shetland Cattle on the way out of Dunvagen.

Stayed in a beautiful old hotel in Ballachulish thursday night, went to dinner at Neal and Catie’s house. He’s quite a bit like his son Ewan. Or I should say Ewan is a lot like him.

Drove behind a triple length truck loaded with many many logs for about three hours on friday on the way to Inverness. Stopped at Loch Ness to let some distance come between us.

Loch Ness is freakin huge.

By the time we hit Inverness, it was getting close to our dinner reservation for the evening, so we bypassed the B&B and headed straight to Jean’s house. Jean is the mother of my cousin Paul. The one whose wedding I went to last May. When I say ‘cousin’ I really mean ‘my grandfather’s cousin’s son’ Make sense?

We all sat around and caught up for a bit, then while my dad and sister helped got the stuff into the B&B, Kev and I joined Paul at a waterfront pub for a couple rounds. I would never have taken Paul to be a socialist, but boy is he. Had some great conversations between the three of us, Kev (the public policy guy who is planning on taking on Washington), Paul (the informed and educated foreigner) and myself (the philosopher who can’t remember names for shit).

The conversation continued through dinner. My portion was small. Paul thought so too. He had a big plate full of pasta with prawn. Bastard.

Back out to the pub after that, this time with my sister too. This time the conversation was about how misguided Paul was as to his perception of his american cousins and what he thought were our puritanical ways. Boy were his eyes opened.

Walked back to the B&B in true Scottish weather. Came in, dried off, went to bed.

I don’t know why our flight was for 8:30 in the morning. Fuckin A. Paul drove us to the airport though, so more conversation.

That pretty much brings us back to America, where the motherland trip ended. I’ll be putting some photos up, and probably putting them into the relevant entries as well, so you might want to check back sometime. I am going to go and get cleaned up after I finish this, then I have to go over to campus and take a Religions of the World exam that had been rescheduled for last week. I don’t like that class. Damn requirements.

I need a haircut.

Mood: dirty
